Income Converter Help
To use the income converter, select a state (or select National), a year, and a family size. Then, enter one of the following values-annual income (in dollars), percent of the federal poverty level (%FPL), or percent of state (or National) median income (%SMI)-and the Income Converter will return the other two values.
To convert a particular Annual Income into its corresponding %FPL and %SMI: Enter a dollar amount, then click the calculate button underneath. For example, if you select the National value for a family of 3 in the year 2000, enter an annual income of $10,000, and click the calculate button, the Income Converter returns a value of 70.7% FPL and 19.1% SMI.
To convert %FPL or %SMI, enter a whole number. For example, to calculate the annual income corresponding to 50% FPL, enter the number 50 in the middle box, then click the button underneath.
To view the federal poverty level in dollars for a given year and family size, enter 100 in %FPL and click the button underneath. For example, in 2000 for a family of 3, the federal poverty level was $14,150. Change the family size to a family of 4, click the calculate button again, and the federal poverty level returned is $17,050. If you select different states, the annual income amount will remain the same because it represents the federal poverty level for the contiguous 48 states (Alaska and Hawaii have different values).
To view the median income for a given state (or National), year and family size, enter 100 and click the button underneath. For example, the National median income in 2000 for a family of 3 was $52,272, while Alabama's state median income in 2000 for a family of 3 was $43,219.
