The National Center for Children in Poverty (NCCP) is based at the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University. NCCP is the sole owner of the information collected on nccp.org.
On some pages throughout the site there is a form for requesting subscription to NCCP’s mailing lists, which are sent out periodically to notify interested parties of NCCP-related news. The user is required to provide an e-mail address so that we can send these e-mail newsletters. Subscribers will receive only those mailings that they have requested, and can modify their subscription preferences on the Email List page. If subscribers wish to remove all identifying information from our database, they may do so by canceling the subscription to our mailing list on the Email List page.
On rare occasions it is necessary to send out a strictly service related announcement. For instance, if our service is temporarily suspended for maintenance we might send users an email. Generally, users may not opt-out of these communications, though they can deactivate their account. However, these communications are not promotional in nature.
A cookie is a small piece of data stored on the user’s computer tied to information about the user. We use persistent cookies—text files stored on the user’s hard drive and deleted automatically after a week—as part of the Data Wizards and the Family Resource Simulator.
These tools allow a user to generate tables and charts based on information specified by the user. A persistent cookie will contain an anonymous identifier matching a user’s settings in the Wizards or the Simulator to a particular machine, allowing the site to recall a user’s past settings. These cookies will contain no personally identifying information about a user, nor will they be linked to other identifying information on the web server.
Persistent cookies can be removed by following Internet browser help file directions. Excellent information about what cookies are and how you can control the cookies on your computer can be found in the Unofficial Cookie FAQ. If users reject cookies, it is still possible to use our site. The drawback to this is that the 50-State Data Wizards and Family Resource Simulators will not be available.
Like most standard Web site servers we use log files. These files include internet protocol (IP) addresses, browser type, internet service provider (ISP), referring/exit pages, platform type, date/time stamp, and number of clicks to analyze trends, administer the site, track user’s movement in the aggregate, and gather broad demographic information for aggregate use. IP addresses, etc. are not linked to personally identifiable information.
Though we make every reasonable effort to preserve user privacy, we may need to disclose personal information about you in certain circumstances. Specifically, as exceptions to this Privacy Statement, we may need to, and will, without notice to you, release specific information about you or your account to comply with any valid legal process such as a search warrant, subpoena, statute or court order, or in other special cases, such as, for example, an attempted breach of the security of the website or a physical threat to you or others.
We share aggregated information with our associates, which may include other units of Columbia University and organizations that provide funding to NCCP. This data is not linked to any personally identifiable information.
This Web site contains links to other sites. Please be aware that we, NCCP, are not responsible for the privacy practices of such other sites. We encourage our users to be aware when they leave our site and to read the privacy statements of each and every Web site that collects personally identifiable information. This privacy statement applies solely to information collected by this Web site.
If users’ personally identifiable information changes (such as e-mail address), or if the user no longer desires our service, existing information can be deleted on the Email List page. When a user unsubscribes from the NCCP mailing list, all identifying information is removed from our database.
If, however, we are going to use users’ personally identifiable information in a manner different from that stated at the time of collection we will notify users via email. Users will have a choice as to whether or not we use personal information in this different manner. However, if users have opted out of all communication with the site, or deleted/deactivated an account, then the user will not be contacted, nor will that user’s personal information be used in this new manner. In addition, if we make any material changes in our privacy practices that do not affect user information already stored in our database, we will post a prominent notice on our Web site notifying users of the change. In some cases where we post a notice we will also email users, who have opted to receive communications from us, notifying them of the changes in our privacy practices.
